Sensei Michael R. Price

Sensei began his training in 1986 after watching a martial arts movie marathon. His first class didn’t go well — he was so determined to prove himself capable of escaping a hold that he hit himself in the face.  Yet, a broken nose and bloody uniform did not deter him. Drawn in by the structure, discipline, and excitement of martial arts he returned for more.

Ten years later, he moved to Charlotte to start his own martial arts academy.  The owner and Head Instructor of Charlotte Martial Arts Academy has a broad base of experience in many martial arts including Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, Muay Thai Boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, Kali, Eskrima and Arnis.

Sensei’s main focus is on personal development and achievement through martial arts. He loves teaching both children and adults, encouraging camaraderie among all of his students. “When you promote someone to a black belt, it’s really like they are a little piece of you,” he says. “You have spent so many years breathing and bruising and crying and training along with them.”

Sensei Mary F. Roberts

Encouraged to get out on the mats by her son and Sensei Price, Sensei Roberts began training in the martial arts in 1994. She began with women’s self defense classes, then decided to train for her black belt. She is now a second-degree black belt, CMAA co-owner, and the academy’s Fitness/Kickboxing instructor.

Specializing in nutritional and self-defense training, Sensei Roberts sees the Charlotte Martial Arts Academy as a positive environment for change. She enjoys working with students to embrace the exercise and nutrition aspects of martial arts training, being a part of a student’s transformation of his or her body for the better.

If you see her sparring more in the early part of the year, it’s because she’s also a part-time bookkeeper — and taxes, as you may know already, aren’t always fun.
